An 85-year-old British woman has died after an extreme wind storm hit a campsite in Portugal.
Two other people were seriously injured and three slightly injured at the Albufeira campsite in the Algarve, the Faro district commander for rescue operations reported at a press conference.
In a hotel in Albufeira, also affected by the storm at the end of the morning, 23 people were slightly injured and four were taken to Faro hospital, he added.
The national meteorological office IPMA said it was assessing whether there had been a tornado in the area, and radar images indicated the probability was very high.
It is difficult to predict when or where tornadoes might occur, the IPMA added.
The storm hit the area around 11:00 GMT on Saturday and lasted until 3:00 p.m., he said.
Among the 28 injured in both locations in Albufeira are six children, aged between two months and seven years, all with minor injuries, and 23 adults, aged between 24 and 70, Portugal’s National Institute of Medical Emergencies said.
Faro, Setúbal and Beja, also in southern Portugal, remain under an orange warning today due to persistent rains, sometimes intense and accompanied by storms, according to the IPMA website.
On Friday, the Faro area was affected by very intense and localized gusts of wind that knocked down trees.
