Niger: More than 300 children along with staff have been kidnapped from a Catholic school in Nigeria. Earlier this number was said to be 227, but now it is being told that 315 people have been kidnapped. This is being described as the worst mass kidnapping ever. The Christian Association of Nigeria said on Saturday that it had revealed this number after a verification exercise. Among those kidnapped are 303 students and 12 teachers.
It has been said in a statement that now 303 students and 12 teachers have been kidnapped, taking the total number of kidnapped people to 315. The new figures include 88 students who were caught while trying to escape. This kidnapping has taken place amid an increase in attacks by armed groups and Islamic extremists in Nigeria. This matter has come to light at a time when US President Donald Trump had threatened military action this month regarding the treatment of Christians.
The biggest kidnapping ever
This kind of mass kidnapping is not a new thing in Nigeria. Even before this, in the year 2014, Islamic extremist organization Boko Haram had kidnapped 276 girls in Chibok. According to Reuters, if 315 girls have been kidnapped in the latest case, then this will be a bigger kidnapping than the incident of 2014. The Niger state government said on Friday that the school had ignored instructions that boarding schools should be closed due to the high risk of attacks. However, Reverend Bulus Dauwa Yohana, Chairman of CAN in Niger, said that no such warning had been issued after going to school on Friday night.
All schools and colleges closed
After this terrible incident, the central government has ordered the closure of about 50 federal colleges and public schools have also been closed in some states. The mass kidnapping that took place on Friday was the third such incident in Nigeria this week alone. On Monday, 25 schoolgirls were abducted from a boarding school in Kebbi state, while on Wednesday gunmen abducted 38 worshipers in an attack on a church in Kwara state.
