Combination of tradition and health of Baghelkhand
According to local elders, Khajoorpak is not just a sweet but an important part of the traditional food culture of Baghelkhand. In earlier times, when there were no supplements or energy drinks, such local dishes were made to keep the body strong in winters. Talking to Local 18, local resident Meena Dwivedi says that Khajurpak is beneficial for everyone from children to the elderly and it has been a tradition to eat it regularly during the winter season.
Why is Khajurpak special for winter?
The nature of dates is considered hot which gives energy and warmth to the body in cold weather. The iron present in it is helpful in removing anemia.
Whereas Vitamin B-6 reduces fatigue and weakness. The anti-oxidants found in dates strengthen the immunity, thus preventing problems like cold and cough. Besides, it contains abundant amount of fiber which keeps the digestive system healthy. When it contains nuts like almonds, cashews and pistachios, it also provides healthy fats and proteins to the body.
Strength ready in 15 minutes
The method of making Khajurpak is very easy. First of all, the seeds of dates are taken out and they are cut into small pieces. In a pan, desi ghee is heated, chopped almonds, cashews, pistachios etc. are added and roasted on low flame till they turn golden. After this, dates are added to the same pan and cooked for 5 to 7 minutes until they become soft and sticky. Then roasted dry fruits are added to it and the mixture is prepared well.
The prepared mixture is spread in a greased tray and shaped into a roll or barfi. When it cools down, it is cut and served. In winter, eating one or two pieces of dates in the morning or evening gives instant energy to the body. This is the reason why today Khajoorpak has become not just a dish but the identity of Baghelkhand and a reliable support for local health.
