What is Pangolin
Pangolin is a dark-brown or yellowish-brown elongated organism. It looks somewhat like a snake and a lizard and comes under the category of mammals. Pangolin is known by many names. Due to its snake-like shape, some people call it as Sallu snake. Because of the flake on the body, it is also known as Vajrasalk. Some people also call this creature ant-eating due to eating ant and termites. It is a very direct organism that does not harm anyone. Pangolins are mainly found in Uttarakhand. They live in burrows in the ground around aquatic sources. They live mostly single lives. They spend their lives eating ants and termites.

The purpose of celebrating ‘World Pangolin Day’ is to save the disappearing existence of the species of pangolin creature. Keeping in mind the decreasing number of pangolins, this organism has been included in the species of threatened organisms. Pangolin potential areas are being marked in Uttarakhand. Along with this, efforts are also being made to provide this friendly environment to this creature. In order to preserve the existence of the pangolin, the International Conservation of Nature has said that its conservation is very important. Uttarakhand Forest Department and Wildlife Institute of India are working jointly for the conservation of pangolins.

Pangolin is among the species of threatened organisms whose numbers are decreasing day by day. In fact, the smuggling of bones and meat of pangolin is happening fast in the international market. It is most commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). According to estimates, the business of Chinese medicines is about 130 billion dollars. They are used in making many other types of drugs along with sexual enhancers. Some people also use its scales i.e. thick skin dried, grinded and filled in capsules as powerful medicines. So in many countries it is eaten as non-veg food. Because the price of its meat is up to 27 thousand rupees per kg in the market. Therefore, it is served in many expensive restaurants and hotels. Not only this, some tantric also hunt pangolin for sorcery. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), pangolin alone contributes 20 percent of the wildlife that is smuggled across the world.
