India has vehemently rejected the allegations made regarding dumping of rice in America. The government says that the Indian rice sent to America is premium quality Basmati. According to India, there is no primary basis for dumping in this export.
New Delhi. India has completely rejected the allegations made regarding dumping of rice in America. The government says that the rice exported from India to the US is mostly premium quality Basmati rice, which costs much more than normal non-Basmati rice. In such a situation, the allegation of dumping is not logical. India has made it clear that no formal investigation has been initiated by America yet in this matter.
India’s clarification on dumping allegations
Indian Trade Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal said in the press conference that India does not see any primary case of dumping. According to him, the nature of India’s rice export is such that it cannot be kept in the category of selling it at low prices. Dumping means exporting a product at less than its normal price, whereas Basmati rice is sold at a higher price in the international market due to its aroma and quality.
Controversy increased due to Trump’s statement
US President Donald Trump had said last week that more tariffs could be imposed on rice coming from India. He accused India of dumping rice in America. Earlier in the month of August, America had increased the tariff on many products coming from India to 50 percent. This had an impact on the export of textiles, chemicals and food products like shrimp. Now due to the statement given regarding rice, the trade tension between the two countries has once again come into discussion.
India’s rice exports in figures
India is the world’s largest exporter of rice. In the financial year 2024-25, India exported a total of 20.2 million metric tons of rice. Out of this, about 3.35 lakh tonnes of rice was sent to America, which included about 2.74 lakh tonnes of Basmati rice. It is clear from this that a large part of the Indian rice sent to America is of premium grade and not cheap rice.
Talks continue between India and America
Continuous talks are going on on trade relations between India and America. Recently, the Indian delegation led by Rajesh Aggarwal met US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer in Delhi. Bilateral trade and the proposed trade agreement were discussed in this meeting. India’s stand is clear that it exports as per the rules, based on quality and there is no substance in the allegations of dumping.
