India’s traditional Kolhapuri slippers are now going to shine at the international level. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday that after the recent agreement with Prada, the export of Kolhapuri Chappal can now reach $ 1 billion every year.
New Delhi. India’s traditional Kolhapuri slippers are no longer limited to the streets of our cities, but are about to reach the glamorous stores of Italy’s famous fashion brand Prada. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is proud of this historic moment. He said that the export of Kolhapuri slippers can now reach 1 billion dollars every year. Recently, Prada has entered into an agreement (MoU) with two government companies of India to manufacture Kolhapuri-style sandals.
Speaking at the India-Italy Business Forum held in Mumbai, Goyal said, “When I heard the news of the collaboration between Prada and Kolhapuri slipper makers, I was very happy. Over the years, on many occasions, even in front of the press, I have often wondered why Kolhapuri slippers with such beautiful designs, handwork, bright colours, comfort and distinct style cannot become a global brand. I am happy that Prada chose it. Now we can take the Kolhapuri brand and design to the whole world.” I have always imagined that Kolhapuri slippers can be exported from India. I want both sides to work together in this direction.
Goyal further said that once you wear Kolhapuri slippers, you will not want to wear anything else. I have always worn these since childhood. I am confident that India’s artisans, craftsmen and leather makers, along with a brand like Prada, will make it a global brand.”
