Ghaziabad. As soon as the wedding season has started, the markets have returned to their glory. Shopping has started increasing everywhere. The movement in the fruit markets has also intensified. Especially the demand for watermelon has increased more than expected this time. Despite it being winter season, people are purchasing this summer fruit. This is because of marriage. Watermelon has become an important part of the fruit chart at weddings. Watermelon is also being used extensively in preparing many types of sweets, juices and desserts. For this reason its demand is continuously increasing. These days, watermelons coming from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra are being sold rapidly in Sahibabad new fruit-vegetable market. Wedding organizers are in special demand for large sized and sweet tasting watermelons so that better quality fruits can be served to the guests.

Talking to Local 18, market traders say that watermelons which were earlier popular only in summer, are now being sold in winter also. According to businessman Haji Yusuf, this time the arrival of watermelon has increased manifold as compared to previous years. Where earlier on average only 20 to 30 quintals of watermelon were available in the market, now this figure has increased to 800 to 900 quintals. Every day about 8 to 10 vehicles loaded with watermelons are reaching Sahibabad market. Despite increasing demand, not much fluctuation in prices has been seen. At present its wholesale price remains at Rs 40 per kg, which is considered fair for both the market and customers.
Confectioners’ favorite too
Other traders in the market said that despite the increasing winter, the demand for watermelon is not decreasing. Retail shops are also continuously ordering watermelon stock because wedding people are buying it in large quantities. The sweetness of watermelon and its attractive color are liked by the guests in the fruit charts at functions. Confectioners are also making fresh desserts from it in winter.
