Journey to become an international brand
Bacardi’s evolution as an international brand began with the business acumen and foresight of Emilio Bacardi, a third-generation member of founder Don Facundo. He played an important role in making Cuba the ‘Home of Rum’ and Bacardi the ‘King of Rums’. To spread the brand globally, its production was started in other countries. The first country to allow the tariff-free sale of rum was Puerto Rico. The next country was Mexico. With these changes the brand got a new name – Ron Bacardí. ‘Ron’ is the Spanish word for ‘rum’. Interestingly, Bacardi is not found in Cuba today. The main brand of rum in Cuba is called Havana Club, which was previously a private company which was later nationalized by the government. The rum which was earlier made in Bacardi’s distillery is now sold in Cuba under the name Cani.
