Australia has declared Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This decision was taken after the attacks on the Jewish community in Sydney and Melbourne. The government has passed a new law and banned IRGC. Now having any connection with or helping this organization can lead to a jail term of up to 25 years. This action has been taken on the advice of intelligence agencies.
Canberra: Australia has declared Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or IRGC as a terrorist organization. This decision has been taken after the attacks on the Jewish community in Australia. Investigative agencies found that IRGC was behind these attacks. For this, the government has passed a new law named ‘Criminal Code Amendment Act 2025’. IRGC is the first organization to be listed under this new law. The government has made it clear that conspiracies hatched from foreign soil will not be tolerated. Now having any kind of connection with this organization will be considered a serious crime. The Home Ministry has taken this strict decision on the advice of security agencies.
Cowardly plot to attack Jews
- The Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) had investigated the matter. The investigation revealed that the IRGC had planned two major attacks. The first attack took place in Sydney in October 2024. This attack was carried out on Lewis Continental Kitchen. The second attack took place in Melbourne in December 2024. Adas Israel Synagogue was targeted there.
- The government has described these incidents as cowardly acts. Their aim was to create division in Australia’s multicultural society. This plan was made to scare and harm the Jewish community. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that this is a dangerous aggression by a foreign nation. There is no place for this in Australia.
- To deal with this threat, Parliament has passed a special law. This law strictly deals with state sponsored terrorism. It is now a crime to direct IRGC activities in Australia. Becoming its member or funding it would also be illegal. Even recruiting or taking training for this organization would fall under the category of crime.
- Those who break this law will get severe punishment. The culprits can be jailed for up to 25 years. Attorney General Michel Rowland said that these reforms were very necessary. This will make it difficult for foreign attackers to harm Australia. This law will further strengthen our security system.

Action on the advice of intelligence agencies
Home Minister Tony Burke said that this decision is based on intelligence reports. Police and security agencies have now got more powers. They will be able to easily destroy the extremist network. Listing IRGC is an important step towards stopping terrorist activities.
The government has also warned the general public. People have been told that IRGC is now a banned organization. Having any kind of contact with it can land you in jail. The government says every Australian has the right to feel safe.
