These nutrients are obtained from food and drinks. When a person is unable to supply these nutrients through food or suffers from any disease, then he is advised to take multivitamin supplements. These supplements can be in tablet, capsule, liquid or powder form. These contain essential nutrients, which go into the body and remove nutrient deficiency. People who are healthy and there is no deficiency of nutrients in their body, they do not need these supplements. Such people should not consume them.
Which people need it?
The doctor said that elderly, pregnant women, breastfeeding women and people suffering from diseases need these supplements. With increasing age the body’s ability to absorb nutrients may decrease. Elderly people often suffer from deficiency of Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and Calcium. In such situations, doctors often recommend multivitamins or other supplements. Pregnant women and lactating women need more nutrients. In such conditions also it is advisable to take multivitamins. People should not take these supplements on their own free will.
Who should not take supplements?
Health experts said that due to poor lifestyle, people become deficient in nutrients. Many people follow strict dieting, low-calorie diet, vegan or highly restricted diet, due to which there may be deficiency of nutrients like Vitamin B12, Iron, Zinc, Omega-3, Vitamin D. However, multivitamin supplements are not safe for everyone. These should be avoided in some conditions. People who are at risk for kidney disease, hemochromatosis, excess fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, E, K should not take supplements without consulting a doctor. Excessive amounts of some vitamins and minerals can have adverse effects on the body. For example, excessive vitamin A can affect the liver and excess iron can cause disturbances in the digestive system or organ damage.
