Bageshwar: An inspiring story of environmental protection has come to light from Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand, which has given the message to the entire state to connect with nature. Kishan Malda, an ordinary man from Mandalsera area of the district, is today known as ‘Tree Man’. His journey started neither with any government scheme nor with the desire for any award, but an innocent incident gave him the goal of his life.
His mother told that one day years ago a small bird came and sat in their courtyard. On this, he insisted his mother to catch the bird and keep it in the house, but the mother explained that the real freedom of the birds is not in the cage, but in the open forest and trees. At that very moment he decided that he would not imprison any bird, but would instead prepare trees and forests for it to live. This small resolution later turned into a big environmental movement.
More than 10 lakh saplings were planted
After this, Kishan Malda started the work of greening the barren and neglected land of the mountain with the help of his limited resources and labour. Working hard year after year, he has so far planted more than 10 lakh saplings. These plants include traditional mountain trees like oak, birch, cedar as well as fruit and medicinal species. Today this area is known as “Devki Laghu Vatika”, which is not only a center of greenery but has also become a living example of biodiversity.
Devaki’s mini garden has now become a safe haven for birds, butterflies and small wild animals. Local resident Harish Ram says that due to increase in greenery in this area, water sources have also improved and the impact of climate change is being felt less than before. The villagers are also getting the benefit of fodder, fruits and medicinal plants.
Solution to major environmental problems
Kishan Malda believes that if every person takes responsibility for it by planting a tree in his life, then it is possible to solve major environmental problems. He often inspires children and youth in schools and social programs to connect with nature and plant trees. His life without any ostentation is an example of simplicity and service. Today Kishan Malda has become an inspiration not only for Bageshwar but also for environment lovers in entire Uttarakhand. This story, which started with the innocent wish of a bird, teaches the coming generations that even a small resolution can bring about a big change. His green garden is a strong message of nature conservation for the future.
