Local vegetable vendors say that at present the supply of new potatoes from hilly areas, Haryana and Punjab is continuously increasing in the market. For this reason, the rate of potato in the markets remains around ₹ 2000 per quintal. Gajanand, a vegetable seller from Ghazipur, tells Local 18 that the new potatoes coming at this time are mostly coming from the mountains, Haryana and Punjab. The highest demand is for white potatoes. Red potatoes are still available only as ‘old potatoes’, because red potatoes do not spoil quickly and can be stored for months.
Who is more in demand?
New potato has reached Ghazipur market and there is good demand among buyers. Especially white potato is being liked more because its peel is soft, easy to cook and it is considered as “fresh potato of the season”. Many retailers, including local vegetable seller Gajanand, say that at present customers are demanding new white potatoes instead of old potatoes. It is in demand even in homes and hotels that make chaat, tikkis and everyday vegetables.
When did the situation change
New potatoes were not available in the market for a long time during heavy rains. At that time, old potato was being sold, the rate of which was around ₹ 1900 quintal. Now, as soon as the season opens, new potatoes are arriving in the market and their price remains stable. The new potato is reaching Ghazipur mainly from the hilly areas like Himachal and Uttarakhand, and the plains of Punjab and Haryana. The supply from these three sources has maintained adequate availability in the area. Increased supply from all three states has kept prices stable.

White potato, being new, cooks quickly and is slightly sweet in taste. But its weakness is that it melts quickly, so shopkeepers sell it only as new goods. Red potato is being sold despite being old because it is durable and does not break down easily during cooking.
