Paro Iconic Sari: The picture of Devdas’s iconic saree has not gone away from people’s minds even today. This saree was longer than the normal saree. The making story of this seemingly normal saree adds to its beauty.
Bollywood’s legend film Devdas (2002) is still remembered for its music and especially fashion. The saree style of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who played the role of Paro in the film, is still considered one of the most prestigious looks of Indian cinema.
But do you know how this saree was designed and how it started a new chapter in the world of fashion as soon as the film was released? No, then let us know the making story of Paro’s iconic saree.
600 sarees were made
Neeta Lulla, the costume designer for Devdas, designed and bought around 600 sarees for Paro, from which different looks were created. Instead of the traditional 6-metre sarees, these sarees were kept 8–9 meters long to create a grand and regal effect on the screen.
saree made in one night
Paro’s saree in the climax scene of the film, which became the identity of the film, was prepared overnight. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali said a few hours before the shooting that the pallu of the saree should be long enough so that it could create a better visual effect.
Based on Sanjay Leela’s demand, Neeta Lulla and her team prepared a 12-14 meter long saree. For this the team worked throughout the night. She made a new saree by cutting and joining two-three sarees and by the next morning the iconic saree was ready. However, till then no one knew that this saree was going to become the identity of the film Devdas.
Beauty of character shown through saree
This saree was not just a fabric, it was associated with the emotional depth of Paro’s character and Bengali culture. The traditional red-and-white Lal Paro sari established Paro as a strong, beautiful and self-confident woman on screen, which is still taught in fashion and film history courses today.
Costume designer received national award
The costume designer of the film Devdas also received the National Award for this saree and Paro’s saree is considered one of the most beautiful and fashion statements of Indian cinema.
