Dehradun News: Bollywood’s ‘He-Man’ Dharmendra was not just an actor but also the heartbeat of millions of hearts. His demise is the end of an era, but even today many stories and memories related to him are fresh in the valleys of Dehradun. His relationship with Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, especially Dehradun and Mussoorie, is decades old and very special.
Bollywood superstar Dharmendra has now said goodbye to this world. Film critic Manoj Panjanani said that Dharmendra was not only a brilliant actor but also a person with an excellent personality, whose glow and smile attracted people. Dharmendra’s shooting, his simplicity and the craze of his fans towards him, all this together shows his connection with Dehradun and how much he loved this place.
The most memorable time of Dharmendra’s association with Dehradun is the year 1960, when his film ‘Aadmi Aur Insaan’ was shot. Manoj tells that some important parts of this film were shot in Dakpathar Barrage and Koti Colony near Vikasnagar. Many scenes related to the construction of the barrage and a famous song ‘Jagega Insaan…’ were also filmed here, which old people can understand after seeing them.
Firoz Khan and Saira Banu were in lead roles with Dharmendra in the film ‘Aadmi Aur Insaan’. In this film, Dharmendra was playing the role of a dam engineer and the location of the under-construction Dakpathar Barrage was perfect for his role. He is shown to be an honest engineer who fights the corruption system. It is also said that even today ‘markings’ related to the shooting of this film are present on Dakpathar Barrage, which people come to see.

In the year 1990, when the shooting of the film ‘Farishte’ was going on, the news of his coming to FRI, Dehradun, reached his fans through a daily newspaper. Then about 25 to 30 thousand fans of Dharmendra gathered in the FRI campus to see him. Fans were waiting for him since early morning, but when due to some reason he could not reach here, this uncontrollable crowd of angry fans caused a lot of damage to the Botanical Garden. After this, the FRI administration closed the Botanical Garden for the general public and later started the practice of controlling the entry of the general public in the main campus, which earlier the FRI was open to all.
He also came to Mussoorie, the famous hill station of Dehradun, for the shooting of ‘Dulhan Ek Raat Ki’, released in 1967. In the film ‘Black and White Film’, he came with his costar Nutan amidst the beautiful views of Mussoorie, the queen of mountains. Many scenes of this film were shot in iconic places of Mussoorie like Library Bazaar, Gandhi Chowk, Mall Road and Company Garden. The film’s popular song ‘Kisi Ka Kuch Kho Gaya Hai’ was shot on the famous comedian Johnny Walker on Mall Road. He had shot the film ‘Ganga Ki Laharen’ in the yoga city Rishikesh.
Swami Deepak Nagalia, owner of Prabhat cinema hall, told that when he was in Dehradun during the shooting of ‘Dulhan Ek Raat Ki’, his father had invited him to one of his parties. He was only 15 years old and after seeing Dharmendra, he started liking his personality very much and he says that he had never seen such a handsome person till date.
Dehradun was not just his shooting location, but was the place where he came out of his on-screen character and connected with people like a common man. Some people also say that once when he got free time during the film, he got information that a cricket match was being held at the local ground of Dehradun where Rajiv Gandhi Sports Stadium is today. Posing as an ordinary person, he sat in the spectator gallery and started watching the match. When people noticed him, there was a crowd of people taking autographs. Hemen His footsteps were in the valleys of Uttarakhand, traces and stories of which still resonate in the atmosphere of this place.
