Siddaramaiah and Shivkumar having breakfast together on Saturday morning amidst the growing tension over the post of Chief Minister was an indication that the party now wants to leave behind the old controversies and move forward. Political analysts believe that this meeting was not just a formality but was part of the Congress’s strategy, so that the dispute arising between the two leaders does not turn into a major crisis in public.
Clear the way for transfer of power?
According to this formula prepared within the Congress, Shivkumar will have to remain on the post of Deputy CM for the time being, and the path for transfer of power will be prepared gradually. It is believed that the process of leadership change can be completed by March-April 2026.
Shivkumar also has limitations
However, Shivkumar cannot demand sudden changes because he does not have enough numerical strength within the party to create any kind of pressure. At the same time, Congress also would not want to take risk by removing an experienced leader like Siddaramaiah. In such a situation, considering the political equations, this agreement given to Shivkumar is being considered a better option for him also.
Siddaramaiah’s last term
On the other hand, Siddaramaiah has already made it clear that this is his last term. He has strengthened his influence and legacy in state politics and wants to end his political journey on a positive note. This is the reason why he seems to agree on the new formula for transfer of power.
Will this agreement last?
Some big questions also arise on this entire equation. The first is whether Shivkumar will be able to trust Siddaramaiah? There are many examples of equations changing at the last moment in Karnataka politics. And secondly, will the Congress high command be able to ensure change on time?
Attention to caste equation also
Siddaramaiah is the strongest face of ‘Ahinda’ (Dalits, Backward Classes and Minorities) politics. Whereas Shivakumar represents the Vokkaliga community. Under no circumstances will Congress want to take the risk of disturbing this social balance.
Overall, Congress has controlled the growing tension between the two big leaders for the time being. The compromise formula is ready, but its success will depend on how the political equations change in the coming months and how strongly the party high command is able to implement it.
