Agartala. National parties are competing with each other to woo Tipra Motha, who is considered to be the trump card in Tripura’s politics. It is believed that the votes of the tribal party will be crucial in determining who will rule the state after next month’s assembly elections. Tipra Motha, a party led by Pradyot Kishor Manikya Debbarma, rules the Tripura Tribal Autonomous District Council and is demanding a ‘Greater Tipraland’. Tipra Motha says that she will support any party or coalition that agrees with her demands.
The party won 18 out of 28 seats in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections held in April last year in a direct contest with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-IPFT alliance on the demand for ‘Greater Tipperaland’. Was. Analysts say this demand will affect the results of 20 assembly seats, where tribals are electorally influential in the 60-member House.
Debbarma said – Our party is ready for an alliance with the national party
Debbarma said his party was ready to forge an alliance with any national party that provided a constitutional solution to the demands of the ‘original’ people of Tripura. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government here, on its part, has crossed all the stops and started projects for the development of this remote state. Debbarma has told reporters on several occasions, “We want a constitutional solution to our demand, which only the central government can provide.” It is not possible to solve our problem only by approving a financial package.
Party’s thinking linked to tribal tradition
The party wants the Center to discuss its demand, but has not received any response so far. All major political parties in the state, including the ruling BJP, the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Congress, have, however, rejected the demand on several occasions, calling it “separatist and divisive”. Debbarma said, “Many Bengalis live in the tribal council area. We want them to live in peace and harmony. In the princely state of Tripura, Bengalis and tribals lived peacefully and we want to maintain that tradition.
“If the Center does not agree to our demand, then Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Union Home Minister Amit Shah should give us an alternative solution in writing and we will discuss it with the people of our community,” he said. “However, the Center is neither responding to our demand nor inviting us for talks. He can hold talks with the groups who have taken up arms but not with us as we are agitating peacefully.
