China 9-9-6 Work Culture: There was a debate about working hours and work culture in India two years ago when Infosys founder Narayana Murthy advised Indian youth to work 70 hours a week. Once again, in an interview given to a private television channel, he cited China’s 9-9-6 model. Narayana Murthy said that if the country wants to progress and compare itself with a developed economy like China, then Indian youth will have to increase their working hours.
In such a situation, it is important to know which Chinese working model 9-9-6 is the example of which Narayana Murthy is advising the Indian youth to learn.
What is 9-9-6 work model?
In fact, in the 9-9-6 model that Chinese tech companies are adopting, employees have been asked to work from 9 am to 9 pm and for six consecutive days a week. This adds up to 72-hours of work a week. However, in most countries the working hours are between 40 to 48.
This work model was quite popular in China at a time when tech companies Alibaba and Huawei were growing rapidly. The logic behind this was that long working hours are necessary to create world class products and stay ahead in global competition. Its supporters argue that due to the 9-9-6 work model, China has achieved tremendous growth in the year 2010.
Whereas, critics have completely opposite opinion and they say that this has increased stress among people and the lifestyle has become unhealthy.
Why is there chaos?
However, when complaints against this work culture increased, then in the year 2021, the Supreme Court of China declared it illegal. However, reports suggest that this model is still being worked on informally in many companies.
Nayaran Murthy said during the interview that India is still far behind China in economic matters. He said that China’s economy is about six times bigger than India’s. In such a situation, cooperation is being expected from all sections in a disciplined manner.
