Prem Chopra Silent Heart Condition: Bollywood actor Prem Chopra, at the age of 90, has a fatal heart condition called aortic stenosis. Due to which transcatheter aortic valve implantation had to be done, after which the actor is now completely fine.
Veteran Bollywood actor Prem Chopra suffered from serious heart disease Aortic Stenosis at the age of 90. Recently the actor had to undergo Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure. Information about the actor’s health has been shared by his son-in-law and actor Sharman Joshi on Instagram. What is this disease and how dangerous is it, here we are telling you in detail.
What is aortic stenosis?
In aortic stenosis, the aortic valve of the heart starts shrinking and does not open completely. Due to this, the blood flowing from the heart to the rest of the body starts stopping. This can weaken the heart muscle and if timely treatment is not received, the risk of heart failure increases. With increasing age, calcium starts accumulating on the heart valves, due to which they become hard and tough.
How serious can this disease be?
When symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain or unconsciousness start appearing in the patient, immediate treatment is needed otherwise the risk of death increases. Research shows that if valve replacement surgery is not done on time after symptoms appear, the chances of death increase. Therefore, timely identification and investigation is very important.
Does this disease occur without symptoms?
In many people, this disease remains symptomless in the initial stages. According to the American Heart Association, many patients with moderate aortic stenosis do not have any symptoms, which can lead to a late diagnosis. During this time, the heart increases its capacity and keeps pumping blood, due to which its wall starts thickening.
How is the investigation done?
Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is done to identify this disease. This test gives important information like valve size, blood speed and pressure. Apart from this, ECG, X-ray and other imaging techniques also help in understanding the condition of the heart.
What is TAVI and why was this option chosen?
TAVI is considered a very safe and less painful option for elderly patients. Earlier, aortic stenosis was treated with open-heart surgery, which is a more risky and long recovery process. Whereas in TAVI, a new valve is delivered to the heart through a leg vein, which is an easier process and the patient can recover quickly and return home.
