Cold wave continued in Delhi from January 5 to 9 in the first phase

New Delhi: Cold is at its peak in India. It is getting cold in North India. The torture of winter continues. People are lighting bonfires to avoid the cold, using room heaters. According to the bulletin of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), cold wave conditions are very likely in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh and northern Rajasthan for the next three days. Due to two back-to-back western disturbances, there was some relief from the cold of winter in the capital with the condition of cold wave on Thursday.
The mercury rose by 3 to 4 degrees in most parts of the city along with Delhi’s Safdarjung station. The minimum temperature was recorded at 5.6 degree Celsius. It was one degree below normal, but three notches higher than Wednesday’s minimum of 2.6 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted drizzle or light rain at some places on Friday morning. IMD said that there is a possibility of more rain between 23 and 25 January. This shows that after January 26, there is a possibility of increasing cold again.

IMD data shows that this year, residents of Delhi have experienced an unusually prolonged cold spell for most of January. Wednesday was the third consecutive cold wave day in the second phase for Delhi with a temperature of 2.6 degrees Celsius in Safdarjung and the eighth cold wave day so far in the month.
According to IMD data, the maximum number of cold wave days, 12, were recorded in January 2008. Also in 1997, 1998 and 2021, Delhi recorded seven days of cold wave in the entire month. Significantly, the IMD classifies a cold wave in an area when the minimum temperature is 4.5 degrees Celsius or more above the normal level, or when it drops to 4 degrees Celsius or less.
Delhi’s temperature rises
This year, between January 5 and January 9, a long cold wave was observed in Delhi for five consecutive days. Which is the maximum number of days in a phase in the last 31 years. The last time Delhi faced a similar winter was in 2013, when cold wave was recorded for five consecutive days. On Thursday, the city’s maximum temperature also soared to 22.6°C, three notches above normal and Wednesday’s maximum of 19.6°C.
In view of the effect of Western Disturbance, IMD has predicted late night drizzle on 23 January and light rain on 24 January. There is a possibility of drizzle again on 25 January. While the maximum temperature is expected to be between 21°C and 23°C till January 25, the minimum temperature of Delhi is expected to rise further and between January 20 and 25 it is expected to be between 9°C to 10°C.

poor air quality
Delhi’s air quality worsened on Thursday. The air quality index (AQI) touched a reading of 338 (very poor), according to the 4 pm bulletin of the Central Pollution Control Board. The reading on Wednesday was 306 (very poor). The forecast shows that Delhi’s AQI is likely to turn “poor” by January 20 due to increase in rain and wind speed.
An AQI between 0-50 is considered good, 51 and 100 satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor and more than 400 severe.
