PM Modi Ethiopia Visit: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Ethiopia was very special. PM Modi was given a grand welcome in Ethiopia and he was also awarded Ethiopia’s highest honour. Apart from this, Vande Mataram was also sung during the dinner. When he reached the Parliament to give a speech, the applause continued for about 2 minutes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ethiopia for the first time and his visit was very special. From his welcome here to the dinner party organized in his honor and the speech in Parliament, there were historic moments. PM Modi was welcomed by singing Vande Mataram song. This visit took place on the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, which shows the growing strategic and diplomatic importance of India-Ethiopia relations. Soon after Prime Minister Modi’s arrival, both the leaders were seen having a small informal conversation at the airport itself.
Members of the Indian community in Ethiopia welcomed Prime Minister Modi with warmth and enthusiasm upon his arrival at the hotel in Addis Ababa. During this, the Indian PM interacted with the NRIs and the NRIs, who were waiting for hours to catch a glimpse of PM Modi, waved Indian flags. When PM Modi reached the Ethiopian Parliament, the MPs welcomed him warmly.
Applause for 1 minute 22 seconds to welcome PM
The MPs stood up and clapped before PM Modi’s speech and encouraged him. PM Modi said that he felt like home during his visit to Ethiopia and described it as a very proud moment to address the Parliament of the African country. Earlier, he laid flowers at the Adwa Victory Memorial in Addis Ababa. The monument commemorates the historic Battle of Adwa of 1896, during which Ethiopian forces achieved victory over Italian attackers.
What did Prime Minister Narendra Modi say?
Addressing the session, PM Modi said- ‘It is a matter of great pride for me to stand in front of you today. It feels great to be in Ethiopia, the land of lions. I feel like home because my home state Gujarat in India is also the home of lions. Apart from this, the PM said – ‘I feel honored to be in the heart of the country, in this temple of democracy, with old understanding and modern expectations. I come to you with deep respect for your Parliament, your people and your democratic journey. On behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India, I bring best wishes of friendship, goodwill and brotherhood. Regarding the highest honor received from Ethiopia, he said that I humbly accept this honor with folded hands on behalf of the people of India.
Vande Mataram compared to the national anthem
Comparing India’s national song ‘Vande Mataram’ and Ethiopia’s national anthem, the Prime Minister said that in both our land has been called mother. They inspire us to be proud of heritage, culture, beauty and protect the motherland. Along with this, he described the cultural heritage of Ethiopia as similar to that of India and said that it is one of the oldest civilizations in the world.
Ethiopian PM invited
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited his Ethiopian counterpart, Abiy Ahmed Ali, to attend the AI Impact Summit and the BRICS Summit. According to the information shared by the Ministry of External Affairs, India is going to preside over the AI Impact Summit and BRICS in 2026. Briefing the media about the Prime Minister’s visit to Ethiopia, Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary, Economic Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, said that India will chair the BRICS grouping for one year from January 1, 2026.
