Unique chhattisgarh rice: Organic farming of Dantewada of Chhattisgarh is in national headlines. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan liked the organic ‘Jawa Phool Rice’ and ordered it online, which is promoting its national branding. Organic farming is done in 65 thousand hectare area of the district and thousands of farmers are producing high quality produce in a chemical-free manner.
Dantewada district is among the largest certified areas of organic farming. More than 65,000 hectares of land is certified as organic farming under the LAC scheme, leading to more than 10,000 farmers growing organic paddy, kodo-kutki, sesame, turmeric and other crops. This achievement is now hoisting the flag at the national level.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan ordered online naturally aromatic ‘Jawa Phool Rice’ produced by Shankhani-Dankhani FPO of Dantewada. This initiative of his not only shows confidence in the farmers’ produce, but also gives a strong base to the organic identity of Dantewada in the national market.
‘Jawa Phool Rice’ is known for its natural aroma, light colour, distinctive taste and high quality. The tribal farmers here have been producing this unique variety for generations by combining traditional agricultural knowledge and modern organic techniques, which has today created a special identity across the country.

About 400 farmers associated with Shankhani-Dankhani FPO have been doing chemical-free farming for years. This FPO is working to deliver not only ‘Jawa Phool Rice’ but also other organic crops of Dantewada like turmeric, kodo, kutki, sesame and flax seeds to many states. This has increased both the income and market access of farmers.
With the combined efforts of the district administration, agriculture department, women’s groups, FPOs and youth, Dantewada is fast becoming a major organic hub. The increasing national order and demand of ‘Jawa Phool Rice’ has given a new identity to the district. Due to this, the products of local farmers are making a place in big markets and new opportunities for organic farming are opening up.
