Bageshwar. These days, more patients of eye related disease (eye ulcer) are being seen in Bageshwar district including the hilly areas of Uttarakhand. Corneal ulcer is considered the most dangerous among eye related diseases, because it directly affects the cornea (transparent part of the eye). When the cornea becomes stained or damaged, the ability to see begins to decline rapidly. Dr. Kalpana Pandey, ophthalmologist of Bageshwar District Hospital, says that it is very dangerous to take corneal ulcer lightly, because this infection can have a permanent effect on vision within a few days. According to Dr. Pandey, this disease usually starts with infection. In many cases, bacteria cause ulcers by forming wounds in the cornea, but fungi, especially Fusarium and Aspergillus, also cause serious ulcers. Viral infections, especially herpes simplex virus, cause deep wounds in the eye, which can take a long time to heal.
Know the cause of the disease
Dr. Pandey says that even a slight injury, scratch, dust or sharp object in the eye can cause ulcers. People working in hilly areas, especially farms, are more likely to develop fungal ulcers, as microscopic injuries caused by plants or wood are often ignored. The risk of ulcers increases manifold in contact lens wearers, especially if carelessness is taken in cleaning the lenses or if the lenses are worn continuously for a long time. Dry eye syndrome and vitamin A deficiency are also important factors giving rise to this disease.
Contact lenses are more dangerous
According to Dr. Pandey, the symptoms of corneal ulcer start suddenly with severe pain. Antibiotic, antiviral or antifungal drops given at the right time prevent ulcers from spreading. Use of contact lenses should be stopped immediately during treatment. Sometimes you may have to open the bandage and put drops of special medicines repeatedly. If the ulcer causes significant damage to the cornea, a corneal transplant may be required.
the light will be snatched away
Dr. Pandey says that this disease is not a joke, but an eye emergency. Late access to the doctor may result in permanent damage to the cornea, and vision may be lost forever. In such a situation, if symptoms like sudden pain, redness, burning, blurring or pus appear in the eyes, then immediately get checked by a specialist. Caution is most important for eye health. Protect eyes from injury, wear glasses when working in dust, keep contact lenses clean. Do not take any infection or injury lightly. A little carelessness can take away your eyesight.
