Rain is forecast to spread to the south and east of the UK on Monday night and Tuesday, and the air is cold enough for some to turn to snow.
A yellow weather warning for snow has been issued for the north and east of Scotland from 03:00 GMT on Tuesday and valid until 18:00.
Between 5 and 10 cm of snow could accumulate at the highest terrain (above 400 m), but even at lower levels between 2 and 5 cm is forecast.
Snow could make some higher routes impassable and there could be some disruption to train travel.
During Tuesday there could also be snow on the hills of the North Pennines and North York Moors.
Ice will also be a hazard with additional Met Office yellow warnings issued for the north and east of Scotland, valid from 7pm Monday until 10am GMT Tuesday.
An ice warning is also issued for central Scotland and as far north as England between 05:00 and 12:00 GMT on Tuesday.
More frequent and heavy snow will spread to the north of Scotland, even down to sea level, overnight on Tuesday. These will continue until Thursday.
With snow accumulating, another Met Office warning for snow and ice is in force for northern Scotland from 18:00 GMT on Tuesday until 21:00 on Thursday.
Frequent snow showers can bring between 2 and 5 cm at low levels, but up to 15-20 cm is possible above 300 m.
Gusty winds and lightning with snow can bring additional dangers.
