DOGE, the famous government unit created by US President Donald Trump, has been closed 8 months before its scheduled tenure. Without any official announcement, this unit, which was created to reduce and increase efficiency in the federal government, has now quietly ended. Now OPM is handling many of its important tasks. Whereas the Trump administration is preparing to continue initiatives like deregulation and AI.
New Delhi. America’s President Donald Trump has suffered another major setback. Another ambitious plan of his has died untimely. The Trump administration’s big project Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was to run till July 2026, but it was stopped eight months before that. Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), confirmed that DOGE no longer ‘exists’ and is no longer acting as a central unit. Launched in January 2025, this department was initially very active in cutting federal staff, reducing the budget and adapting the work of agencies to Trump’s priorities. But suddenly its operations were stopped and its responsibilities gradually started being transferred to OPM.
Big claims, but little public reporting
DOGE claimed to have reduced government costs by several billion dollars, but outside experts could not verify these because the unit did not release any detailed public reports. DOGE was initially in the news – especially because Elon Musk was leading it and at CPAC he also gave a symbolic message of ‘cutting bureaucracy’. Despite this, DOGE’s closure was never publicly announced. White House spokeswoman, however, said that the Trump government stands by its promise to ‘eliminate waste, fraud and abuse’.
DOGE disbanded, but staff moving into new roles
After the demise of DOGE, many of its key members moved to other parts of the administration. Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia now leads the National Design Studio, which aims to improve government websites. DOGE employee Edward Coristine is also included in this team. Many other officials – such as Zackary Terrell (HHS CTO), Rachel Riley (head of the Office of Naval Research) and Jeremy Levin (foreign assistance at the State Department) – have also reached important positions. The design studio is now also working on new websites like Law Enforcement Recruitment and Trump’s Drug-Pricing Plan.
Deregulation and AI initiatives now moving forward in new framework
Elon Musk had stated that the basic goal of DOGE was to reduce regulations, change the government system with AI and cut federal jobs. DOGE may be dead, but these efforts continue. Former DOGE official Scott Langmack is now working with the White House Budget Office to develop AI tools to identify and remove unnecessary regulations. Also, Republican-governed states like Idaho and Florida are moving towards creating local entities like DOGE. This is a clear indication that the Trump administration’s ‘less government, more efficiency’ model will continue to advance in some form or the other.
