Municipal Corporation Shimla Deputy Mayor Shailendra Chauhan said that it has been more than 150 years since the Dhali tunnel connecting Upper Shimla was built. Now water from this tunnel and due to the increasing population, traffic and tourist influx and area expansion in the area, there is a dire need of another tunnel. In view of this, a new tunnel is being constructed parallel to it. It is proposed to be built under Smart City. The DPR for the construction of the tunnel has been prepared and the final tender process is about to start. The families affected by this will be displaced before the construction of the tunnel, although this tunnel is being constructed with modern technology, but still tomorrow, if any untoward happens, a road map will be prepared to displace the affected families. For this, talks are being held with the smart city and the families concerned.
The Dhali tunnel is one-way and because of this there is always a jam here.
Water is now dripping in the Dhali tunnel built in 1852, a new tunnel will be built
Urban Development Minister Suresh Bhardwaj told that the sloping tunnel built in 1852 is very old. Alternative arrangements are necessary to avoid possible incidents in future. He said that the width to be made with high quality technology would be about 150 meters. There will be a system of movement of vehicles in the tunnel through double lane, which will get rid of the jam. The construction period of the Dhali tunnel has been more than 170 years. Since there are buildings on top of the tunnel, this tunnel will be constructed with special technology so that there is no damage to the buildings. He said that under the Shimla Smart City Mission, people’s cooperation is required for the construction of a parallel highway tunnel along the sloped tunnel. Adequate pedestrian access will be ensured on both sides of the tunnel. Under this, provision will also be made for laying cables or removing water or electricity pipes or communication cables for useful services.
