Temperatures may drop by 1–3 degrees in the mountains, while light snowfall is possible in the evening at higher altitudes.
Rishikesh: Winter is going to be seen at its peak in Uttarakhand on 9 December 2025. Despite the clear weather today, there will be no reduction in cold. The effect of cold wave will remain from the plains to the high altitude areas of the state. Strong cold wind (cold wave) will make people feel shivering throughout the day. Despite clear sky in hilly areas, snowy winds can reduce the temperature by 1–3 degrees. There will be a possibility of clouds and light snow falling in some high hilly areas by evening.
According to the information received from the Meteorological Department, the effect of severe cold in the morning will be visible in the entire state. The temperature in plain areas like Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kashipur, Rudrapur is expected to be recorded at 5°C-7°C. Along with this, due to presence of humidity up to 80–90%, fog and dense mist can limit visibility to 50–200 meters. This will slow down traffic and may increase the risk of road accidents. At places like Chopta, Auli, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Munsiyari, Harsil, the morning minimum temperature can be recorded between -1°C to 2°C. In open areas, icy winds will create a ‘wind chill effect’, causing the perceived temperature to be 2–3°C lower than the actual temperature.
Afternoon time will definitely provide some relief, but the heat in the sun will be very less. The maximum temperature in the plains can go up to 16°C–19°C, while in the mountains it will remain only 8°C–12°C. Cold winds will reduce the effect of sunlight, due to which people will feel chilled even while sitting in the sun. Crowds may be seen at tourist places, especially in areas like Auli and Harsil, where light snow will be present.
The weather will become more harsh after evening. At night, temperatures in the plains may again drop to around 6°C–8°C, while night temperatures in the mountains are likely to remain between -2°C to 2°C. In the higher Himalayan areas, icy winds can blow at a speed of 20–35 km/h at night, which will increase the risk of frost. This frost can cause dangerous slippage on the roads.
