At a time when many parties are looking for ways to form an alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections without the Congress and trying to spread their influence, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) during 2021-22 The oldest party has left Congress behind in terms of annual earnings. Election Commission data shows that TMC is now in second place after BJP in terms of income. During 2021-22, the annual income of Mamata Banerjee’s party was Rs 545.74 crore, which was slightly more than Rs 541.27 crore of the Congress.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) made public the annual audit report of all political parties this week. There are eight national parties in India – BJP, Congress, TMC, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) and National People’s Party (NPP) ) Huh. All these national parties collectively earned Rs 3,289.28 crore during 2021-22. However, the income of these parties is not fixed and the annual income of the parties is made by including donations, donations, fees and membership fees collected by them in a financial year.
BJP earned more than the combined income of 7 national parties
The total income of the seven national parties, except the BJP, during 2021-22 was Rs 1,372.16 crore, while the BJP alone received Rs 1,917.12 crore. Donations amounting to Rs 1,775 crore account for the maximum share of the BJP’s total income. It also includes electoral bonds worth Rs 1,033 crore. Electoral bonds account for more than 50 percent of the BJP’s total income. The party has collected Rs 6.31 crore from fees and donations. Last year, when parties declared their donations above Rs 20,000 in 2021-22, the BJP received the maximum donation amount (Rs 614.52 crore). The amount received by BJP is almost four times more than the amount collected by other parties.
TMC’s income has increased by 90 times since 2017
TMC earned only Rs 5.16 crore during 2017-18. The next year this amount increased to Rs 192.65 crore. The income of the party fell in the next two years. The ruling party in West Bengal got Rs 144.73 crore in 2019-20, while the next year the figure was only Rs 74.41 crore. TMC’s earnings in 2021-22 were 545.74 crores, taking a jump of more than seven times compared to last year. It is also important to note that elections were held in West Bengal in 2021 and Mamata Banerjee was re-elected Chief Minister in May that year. The money raised by the party in 2021-22 was more than the money raised between 2014-15 and 2020-21.

BJP has been earning more than Congress for years
The ECI data from 2013-14 also shows that every year except 2015-16, the BJP was earning more than the Congress. That year, the BJP got Rs 570.85 crore, which was just Rs 22 crore less than the Congress’s Rs 593.31 crore. The gap between the earnings of the two parties was the highest in 2019-20, when the BJP earned Rs 2,941 crore more than the Congress. A year later in 2020-21, the difference between the income of the two parties was Rs 467 crore, the lowest since 2013-14.
