Jamshedpur. This historical vegetable market of Jamshedpur, which is about 70 years old, is still considered to be the largest and busiest market of the entire Kolhan. Old people of the city say that when Jamshedpur had just started growing, this market became an important place for farmers and traders.
Selling millions before you wake up
The morning starts very early here. As soon as the gates of the market open at 4 in the morning, lines of fresh vegetables are already ready to be sold inside. By the time the people of the city start waking up from sleep, vegetables worth lakhs of rupees have already been sold. This is the time when the sounds of bidding echo throughout the market – this bidding is the real identity of wholesale trade. Small traders, street vendors and retail shopkeepers buy vegetables from here and deliver them to the entire city and surrounding areas.
Vegetable market manager Rameshwar Kumar Mandal says that not only Jharkhand, but also farmers and traders bring vegetables from Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, Patmada, Bodam and even Chhattisgarh. The consumption of vegetables in this market is so high that everyone gets good sales.
Good yield this time
Vegetable production has also been good this season. Vegetables like carrot, radish, tomato, capsicum, cauliflower, cabbage are available in large quantities. Bottle gourd, cucumber, brinjal, ladyfinger, bitter gourd and various types of green leafy vegetables are also easily available here. Good production and good consumption have brought happiness back to the faces of farmers and traders.
economic heartbeat of the city
Old shopkeepers of the market say that times have changed, but the hustle and bustle of the market and its identity are still the same. The morning rush here, the smell of fresh vegetables and the feeling of hard work of the farmers make this market not just a market but the economic heartbeat of the city. This market not only exchanges vegetables but also contains people’s memories, emotions and stories related to generations.
