Specialty Of Mustard Variety Azad Chetna: Developed by CSA Agricultural University, Kanpur, this new variety of ‘Azad Chetna’ mustard gets ready in just 90–95 days and gives 608 kg oil per hectare. Being pest and disease free, it reduces farmers’ costs and increases income. Now farmers of Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana can also earn better profits by growing it in their fields.
Kanpur : Apart from Uttar Pradesh, the new mustard variety ‘Azad Chetna’ developed in 2021 at Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSA), Kanpur, can now be sown in Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana. The Central Seed Committee has recognized this variety as suitable for the climate of these four states, which will benefit lakhs of farmers and is expected to increase their income.
Dr. Mehak Singh, senior agricultural scientist of CSA, said that this variety of mustard ripens in only 90–95 days, whereas normal mustard takes much longer time to ripen. Apart from this, this species gives up to 608 kg of oil per hectare. Due to this variety being pest and disease free, farmers save expenses on medicines and reduce production costs.

Dr. Singh said that the parent seeds of this mustard have been prepared in CSA and these are sent from time to time to agricultural institutions across the country. Farmers can also get seeds from Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Agriculture Department offices or National Seed Corporation (NSC). Adequate quantity of seeds is available and will be delivered to all the farmers.
Boon for farmers of four states
Now farmers of Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana can also grow this improved mustard variety in their fields. Experts say that this crop, which ripens in short time, is pest-free and gives high oil production, will prove to be especially beneficial for the farmers of these states. Due to all these qualities of low cost, high oil, quick preparation and disease-free, Azad Chetna mustard is going to increase the income of farmers and will be seen blooming in the fields in the upcoming Rabi season.
