Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor described Prime Minister Modi’s reception of Russian President Putin as a big message. Talking to StuffUnknownIndia, he clarified that this step is a proof of India’s independent foreign policy where we want good relations with every nation. Tharoor emphasized India’s distinct relationship with Russia, which he described as a long-standing and strategic relationship, unlike China or the US. Citing the usefulness of the S-400 missile system, he described it as the depth of defense cooperation. Clarifying India’s stand on the Ukraine war, he said India is a ‘country of solution and peace’ and wants this violence to end soon. Most importantly, he strongly supported India’s sovereignty while rejecting Western criticisms. He bluntly said, “India is an independent country… No one can give us the right to tell us what to do and what not to do. We will do whatever we want in our national interests.” Tharoor termed Pakistan as irrelevant in this equation.
