Animal Tips: Winter season brings many diseases for animals and they suffer from milk shortage. This causes a lot of loss to the cattle rearers, but now if the cattle rearers feed grass to the animals, it can increase their milk productivity. Let us know about this grass and its benefits.
Rae Bareli: As soon as the winter season begins, special attention needs to be paid to the care of milking animals. At this time, due to cold and dry weather, there is shortage of green fodder, which affects the milk production of animals, but if farmers cultivate Barseem in this season, then there will be no shortage of green fodder throughout the season. Dr. Inderjit Verma (MVSC Mathura), Veterinary Superintendent, Government Veterinary Hospital, Shivgarh, Raebareli district, who has 25 years of experience in the field of veterinary medicine, tells Local 18 that cultivation of Barseem in the winter season is a cheap and sustainable solution for the farmers to increase the health of milch animals and milk production. Once sown, green fodder remains available for months, due to which livestock farmers do not have to worry about fodder.
No choice, this is green gold
According to Dr. Inderjit Verma, Barseem is also called green gold, because it is rich in nutrition and once sown, it can be harvested 5 to 7 times. This crop grows best in cool weather and its first harvest takes place about 55 to 60 days after sowing. After this, next harvesting can be done every 25 to 30 days. Barseem contains about 20 percent protein which is very important for both the health and milk production of animals. It is nutritious fodder not only for cows and buffaloes, but also for goats and sheep. Feeding Barseem strengthens the digestive system of animals and increases the fat content of milk.
method of growing
Loamy soil is considered most suitable for the cultivation of Barseem, which has good drainage system. Farmers can sow it between October and December. About 20 to 25 kg of seeds is sufficient in one acre of field. For better results, before sowing Barseem, apply cow dung manure thoroughly in the field and make the soil friable. Barseem crop requires light irrigation.
First irrigation-do it 4-5 days after sowing and after that give water at an interval of every 10-12 days. To protect the crop from pests, biological measures like spraying of neem or cow urine based liquid can be used. The biggest benefit of Barseem is that it increases soil fertility, as it fixes atmospheric nitrogen in the soil. The next crops also benefit from this.
