This fruit, which is originally from Central America, is capable of changing the condition of the farmers of Bihar. According to experts, it is cultivated in sandy loam soil. There are many districts of Bihar including Kishanganj, Gaya, Purnia, East and West Champaran, where the soil is sandy-loamy. In such a situation, farmers can plant this fruit in their fields without worrying about any loss. Just be careful that there is no stagnation of water in the soil.
By planting once you can get fruits for 25 years
Dragon fruit is such a fruit that you can plant it once and get fruits for the next 25 years. Being a plant of cactus group, it neither needs much irrigation nor much care. In comparison to other crops, there is very less incidence of pest infestation in it. The process of fruiting starts about 14 months after the plant is planted. Initially you can get two to three kg of fruits from it, but as soon as the plant reaches its maturity stage, each plant starts producing 6 to 7 kg of fruits.
Keep these things in mind in farming
In India this fruit is known as Kamalam. Being very nutritious and new, its price in the market ranges from Rs 250 to Rs 600 per kg. If you cultivate it, then you mainly have to take care of the distance between the plants along with water logging, type of soil and its pH value. The matter of relief is that you can grow it by planting it in a pot also. To promote its cultivation, good subsidy is also being given to the farmers by the Bihar government.
