Bengaluru: A strange act of thieves has come to the fore in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka. According to a police complaint, a mobile phone tower, at least 50 feet tall and weighing 10 tonnes, its diesel generator and battery bank have been stolen from Gaushala Road, Garudcharpalya in Mahadevapura. According to a report in The Time of India, the police is on the lookout for the thieves who allegedly made away with the mobile tower and its spare parts between August 1 and September 1, 2022. The police while admitting that they are yet to get information about the exact height and weight of the tower.
If sources in the telecom industry are to be believed, it can be at least 50 feet long and weigh 10 tonnes. He said that the height can also go up to 200 feet. A private company that maintains their installations for various mobile phone service providers has reported the theft to the police. The firm first approached the concerned court, seeking its intervention and direction to the police to trace the miscreants who stole the telecom tower and its accessories worth over Rs 17 lakh.
Case registered on January 1 on the instructions of the court
On the direction of the court, the Mahadevapura police registered an FIR against unknown persons under section 379 (theft) of the IPC on January 1 in this case. According to the statement of the firm, ‘The tower was installed in 2009. However, the technician who was given the responsibility of maintaining it left the job in August 2022. Another technician was appointed in September 2022 and by the time he visited the site, the tower had disappeared. On enquiry, the local people said that they had seen some people opening the tower. The complaint by the firm said, “We demand legal action against the miscreants who have stolen the tower and its material worth more than Rs 17 lakh.”

According to the Times of India report, when the representative of the company who filed the complaint was contacted, he refused to comment in detail. When asked why no one knew how the tower went missing even after the tower stopped working, the representative said, ‘The tower was shut down after the technician left work.’ DCP (Whitefield) S Girish said, ‘Police will investigate the matter, prima facie, the incident seems unreal. We still have many unanswered questions. However, we will investigate the matter and find out what actually happened.
