Red spider is one of the major pests of papaya crop. If it gets on the crop, the fruits become rough and black. Yellow fungus occurs due to attack on the leaves. The easy way to deal with this is to pluck the leaves which have been attacked by the red spider and bury them in a pit somewhere far away.
Ashish Kumar/West Champaran: Papaya harvesting is done from the month of November to the last days of January. During this period, as the plants grow and start bearing fruits, they also start getting affected by various diseases. The month of December is going on and in this month the plants are most at risk of cold. The matter of concern is that all the plants in the garden are laden with fruits which now have to be harvested very soon. A small mistake made during this period can cause huge loss to the farmers. In such a situation, today we are giving you information about the diseases affecting them before harvesting and will also tell you how to protect them from cold.
Protection measures from yellow fungus
Dr. Abhishek Pratap Singh, a senior scientist working at the Agricultural Science Center located in Madhopur of the district, says that papaya plants are mainly affected by diseases like red spider, stem rot, leaf curling and fruit rot. Red spider is one of the major pests of crops. If it gets on the crop, the fruits become rough and black. Yellow fungus occurs due to attack on the leaves. The easy way to deal with this is to pluck the leaves which have been attacked by the red spider and bury them in a pit somewhere far away.
Measures to protect against Colletotrichum gloeosporides
When the papaya tree grows, many types of diseases occur in it. Among these, mainly the disease Colletotrichum gloeosporoides becomes eager to attack the tree. In this disease, small round wet spots are formed on the fruits, which later grow and merge together. The matter of concern is that these brown or black colored diseases appear from the time the fruits appear till they ripen. As a result, the fruits break prematurely and get wasted. For its treatment, you should spray copper oxychloride dissolved in 2.0 grams/liter of water or mencozeb in 2.5 grams/liter of water.
Measures to protect against frost and other diseases
Bettiah farmer Ravikant Pandey, who has been cultivating papaya for almost a decade, says that before harvesting, to protect papaya from frost, one kg hydrated copper sulphate should be mixed in 100 liters of water and sprayed in the soil of plants grown in one acre. You can also use Trichoderma viride to protect both plants and fruits from various types of diseases. Keep in mind that advice from agricultural scientists is very essential for better results.
