Supreme Court News: The Supreme Court’s comment has come in the stampede case that took place on September 27 in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court was shocked after seeing the report of the Registrar General of Madras High Court in this case. The court made a strong comment and said, ‘There is something wrong in the Madras High Court.’ The bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi raised questions on the functioning of the HC and directed all parties to share the report and seek answers. Also refused to amend its earlier decision in this case.
The whole matter of Karur stampede started on 27th September. Around 30,000 people gathered in Karur during TVK’s statewide yatra. The capacity of the venue was only 2,000-3,000, but the crowd went out of control. People waiting since morning became victims of the stampede in the afternoon. In this, 41 people were killed and more than 60 were injured.
Most of the dead in this stampede were children and women. Actor Vijay had expressed grief after this stampede. Also announced an assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the family of each deceased and Rs 2 lakh to the injured. He spoke to the families through video call and said, justice will be done. But the police accused TVK workers of negligence, lack of crowd management and attempt to murder. Vijay was not named, but the High Court described him as running away from responsibility.
High Court’s comment
This matter reached Madras High Court. Madurai bench rejected BJP leader Uma Anandan’s plea for CBI investigation. But a single judge bench of the Chennai bench ordered an SIT probe on October 3, taking a dig at Vijay and TVK, saying they fled the scene and showed no remorse. The bench called it a shocker to the conscience of the nation. Vijay challenged this decision of the High Court in the Supreme Court and said that those comments were made without hearing. On October 13, a CBI inquiry was set up on the orders of the Supreme Court. Retired Justice Ajay Rastogi was monitoring it.
What did the Supreme Court say?
The Supreme Court said in the hearing that the High Court’s method shows lack of sensitivity and appropriateness. The Supreme Court rejected the objection on the word ‘indigenous’ in paragraph 33 of the High Court’s decision, but issued notice on the new petition of KK Ramesh.
Supreme Court sought response from all parties on the report
The Supreme Court asked for the report of the HC Registrar General, in which questions were raised on the functioning of the HC. The bench said, ‘Chennai bench ordered SIT on the petition of Rally SOP, which was out of jurisdiction. Why the repetition even after the Madurai Bench decision? The Supreme Court directed all parties to share the report and seek answers. The Tamil Nadu government described the CBI investigation as a violation of state autonomy. Demanded cancellation from the Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court rejected it.

Rally and stampede incident: During TVK’s statewide yatra, more than 27,000 people had gathered at Velusamypuram in Karur, which was three times its capacity. At 8 pm the crowd went out of control, resulting in 41 deaths (including 9 children) and 60 injuries. Vijay gave assistance of Rs 20 lakh to each family of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh to the injured. - First petition in Madurai High Court: BJP leader Uma Anandan demanded CBI investigation. But, the Madurai Bench rejected it. The bench said that only the state police will investigate.
- Chennai High Court’s SIT order: On October 3, the single judge of the Chennai bench constituted the SIT (under the leadership of IGP Asra Garg). The bench took a dig at Vijay and TVK – ‘They ran away from the scene of the incident, they have no remorse for it.’ However, his party TVK said that he had left there on the instructions of the police.
- Supreme Court’s CBI investigation order: TVK had challenged the High Court’s order in the Supreme Court. On October 13, the Supreme Court (Justices JK Maheshwari and NV Anjariya) handed over the investigation to the CBI. A 3-member panel was formed under the supervision of retired Justice Ajay Rastogi. Supreme Court raised questions on HC, ‘Why should Chennai Bench interfere in Madurai case?’ Also, the objection on the word ‘indigenous’ in paragraph 33 of the decision was rejected.
- Supreme Court’s strict comment on the High Court: On December 12, the bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi, after seeing the report of the HC Registrar General, said, ‘There is something wrong in the Madras High Court.’ Instructed to share the report with all the parties and sought answers and the Supreme Court refused to amend the decision.
