Rishikesh: The effect of cold and dry cold is going to be more visible in Uttarakhand today. Today the temperature is likely to be below normal in the entire state and the sting of cold may increase due to the moisture present in the air. While the effect of fog and light mist will be seen in the plains in the morning, there will be a possibility of icy winds in the hilly districts and light to moderate snowfall in the high altitude areas.
Cold wind, fog and cold wave in the morning
According to the information received from the Meteorological Department, the morning of December 10 will start with severe cold in most parts of Uttarakhand. The morning temperature in plain areas like Dehradun, Haridwar, Rudrapur, Kashipur, Kotdwar and Rishikesh is expected to be recorded between 4°C–6°C. With this, 80–90% moisture can be present in the air, due to which fog and mist are likely to become dense. Visibility may be limited to 50–150 metres. On the other hand, in the hilly and high altitude areas, especially Badrinath, Kedarnath, Auli, Munsiyari, Harsil and Chopta, the morning minimum temperature is likely to be between –1°C to 2°C. The effect of “wind chill effect” will be felt in those areas, due to which the temperature will be felt 2°C–4°C lower than the actual.
Afternoon: Light sunshine, but less heat
If there are no clouds and the sky is clear in the afternoon, then the slow rays of the sun can give some relief to the people in the plain districts. The maximum temperature during this period can go up to 15°C–18°C, but the continuously blowing northerly cold winds will weaken the warmth of the sun. Whereas in the hilly areas the afternoon temperature is expected to be 8°C–12°C. If clouds become active or wind blows strong, the temperature may drop a few points further. Also, light to moderate snowfall may occur in higher reaches, especially after noon.
Increase in cold in evening and night, danger of frost and slipping
By evening the temperature will start falling again. As the sun sets, the air will become more bitter. The night temperature in the plains can go up to 5°C–7°C. During this time, the combination of moisture present in the air and falling temperature will cause the shiver of “cold wave” which will force people to wear warm clothes again and again. Night temperatures in high altitude areas can reach –2°C to 0°C. If it snows during the day, the chances of frost at night will definitely increase.
