These days, there is a lot of discussion on social media about a hotel which is being said to be haunted. Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly has also encountered the ghost present in this hotel, after which he left the hotel.
Lumley Castle, located in County Durham, England, is a magnificent palace, which is now known as a luxury hotel. This castle, built in 1389, is famous for its beauty as well as ghost stories. There have been reports of paranormal activity at this place, which is included in the list of the most haunted hotels in the world, for many centuries.
The most famous of these is the story of the spirit of Lily of Lumley. In the 14th century, this woman named Lily was the owner of the castle. For disobeying the rules of the Catholic Church, two priests killed him by throwing him into a well. It is said that since then his spirit wanders the castle, scaring the guests. This story came into limelight when the Indian cricket team was on England tour in 2002. Then team captain Sourav Ganguly had a ghostly experience.
don’t forget that night
The team stayed at Chester-le-Street for the match and stayed at the Lumley Castle Hotel. Then captain Sourav Ganguly was given a suite room which was very luxurious. After dinner he went to sleep. As soon as I switched off the lights, I heard the sound of water flowing from the bathroom. When I got up and checked, the tap was closed. He slept again but at midnight the same sound started coming again. When this happened many times, Ganguly got scared. He ran to teammate Robin Singh’s room and slept on the floor. Despite being the captain, he did not tell about his fear, only said that he wanted to sleep on the floor. Ganguly later shared this experience in the book ‘Beefy’s Cricket Tales’. He said that there was a match the next morning, so it was necessary to sleep but he did not sleep the whole night due to fear. After this, Ganguly refused to ever stay in this hotel.
Hoteliers promote the story
Interestingly, even after Ganguly, many cricket teams had strange experiences here. In 2004, the West Indies team and in 2005 the Australian team also felt paranormal activity and changed their hotel. Shane Watson was so scared that he had to sleep with Brett Lee. The haunted stories of Lumley Castle are not limited to cricketers only. Local people say that Lily’s spirit comes out of the well and passes through the walls of the castle. Many guests have complained of seeing the shadow of a blonde woman, hearing strange noises and things moving on their own. The hotel’s website also promotes these stories and offers ghost tours. Today, it is a 73-room luxury hotel that hosts weddings and events, but guests who stay overnight often report scary experiences. These days this story is again going viral on social media.
