In society, marriage is a system that requires two people. But with time, as people’s thinking is changing, the marriage arrangements are also changing. Now more than two people have started tying the knot together. Men are marrying each other, women are marrying together. But now it is surprising that people have started marrying themselves also.
Dressed in a white dress, 45-year-old Kim Adams got married in a flower-decorated pavilion on the beautiful beach of Mexico. But the surprising thing was that there was no groom in this marriage. Kim did not marry anyone else but herself. This decision was not an impulse but a celebration of self-respect and self-acceptance after going through a difficult phase of life. California native Kim, who now lives in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, says that the last few years were very difficult for her. “I was never suicidal, but just wanted this bad phase to end,” she says.

The girl got married to herself
After leaving several abusive and unsuccessful relationships, Kim decided that on her 45th birthday, November 1, she would marry herself. She said, “Dia De Los Muertos (the festival of remembrance of the dead) was symbolic for me. It felt as if my old sorrows, my old identity, were dying and I was starting a new one.” Kim never believed in a traditional institution like marriage. “I’ve seen a lot of people ruin their marriages,” she says. “Many of my friends are divorced, and I always wondered why the legal system needed to get into romantic relationships.” One of her former partners had proposed marriage, but Kim clearly said – “Please don’t do this.” After this the relationship broke down.
