Odisha News: Odisha government has started Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana to provide marriage assistance of Rs 51,000 to girls from economically weaker families. This includes direct financial assistance of Rs 35,000 and wedding gifts of Rs 10,000. The objective of the scheme is to reduce marriage expenses and promote responsible and legal marriage system.

The Odisha government has announced the implementation of a new scheme, giving great relief to girls and economically weaker (EWS) families. In Odisha, the government will now provide direct financial assistance and will itself bear the expenses of many wedding related needs. This scheme is going to provide relief to many families from the burden of marriage.
Why was this scheme started?
After the huge success of the Subhadra scheme already being run for women in Odisha, the government decided to help in the marriage expenses of girls. The special thing is that a large female population of the state was earlier considered to be traditional supporters of BJD. Especially women associated with self-help groups. But the government is increasingly reaching out to women through new schemes.
How much help will I get?
- Total assistance of Rs 51,000: Of which Rs 35,000 will be spent on direct financial assistance, Rs 10,000 will be spent on wedding gifts (saree, bangles, bindi, anklets, toe rings, utensils) and Rs 6,000 will be spent on arrangements related to the wedding.
Who will be the characters?
- The girl must be 18 years of age or older.
- It is mandatory to belong to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category.
- Remarriage of widowed women is also included in the scope of this scheme.
- Assistance will be available only after marriage registration.
A large section of women in Odisha was long considered a strong support base of BJD.
What changes does the government want to bring in the marriage system?
The objective of this scheme is not only to provide financial assistance. Through this, the government wants to stop hasty marriages in the society. Marriage registration should increase, opposition to dowry should be strengthened and awareness about women’s rights should increase. It is clearly written in the government instructions that this scheme will promote responsible and dignified marriage system.
How much will the government spend?
The state government will spend about Rs 60 crore on this scheme in the next five years. The government hopes that this initiative will come as a relief to hundreds of families, especially in areas where marriages are postponed due to financial constraints or families have to take loans.
