Haridwar: Haridwar of Uttarakhand is known for its religious places, but now the tourism department is planning to make the experience here even more interesting by adding history and adventure. Preparations are being made to preserve the old British jail located in Shyampur area and connect it with adventure tourism.
History of jail is related to Sultana dacoit
This ruined building in Shyampur is about 125 years old. Earlier the British used to maintain law and order from this place and it was used as a jail or police station. The special thing is that the history of this jail is linked to Sultana Daku, the Indian Robin Hood who was active in the beginning of the 20th century. It is said that a special officer named Freddy Young was called to catch the Sultana dacoit and after being arrested, he was kept in this jail for some time.
The tourism department is now planning to preserve this building and connect it with Jhilmil Lake Safari. With this, the tourists coming here will not only experience history but will also be able to enjoy adventure tourism.
There are many stories and legends about Sultana Daku in the areas of Haridwar, Bijnor, Kotdwar and Moradabad. He is described as Robin Hood, who looted money from the British and the rich and helped the poor. Due to the adventurous and interesting acts of Sultana Daku, people consider her an attractive and interesting character. There is a constant flow of tourists to Sultana’s fort located in Najibabad.
The Tourism Department has said that linking the experience of jungle safari and adventure tourism with this old jail will increase the tourism potential in the area. After the completion of this scheme, people coming to Haridwar will be able to enjoy a unique experience of history, thrill and adventure activities.
Preservation of the British era jail in Shyampur by linking it with the memories of Sultana Daku will not only promote tourism but will also make it an attractive place for youth and history lovers. This project will help in making Haridwar a center of religious and adventure tourism.
