Ambala: Winter season has started and in this season people prefer good food. We prepare new vegetables every day and make our food even better, but these days the prices of tomatoes, coriander, garlic and ginger, which enhance the taste of food, are skyrocketing, which has spoiled the taste of food in some ways and has also completely shaken the pocket budget of the common people.
The arrival of vegetables in the market is also less
In fact, the crop of cabbage and tomato coming from Punjab and Himachal is decreasing this time and the direct reason for this is said to be the crops being affected by rains and floods during the monsoon season. According to shopkeepers, the arrival of vegetables in the market is decreasing these days, due to which the prices have increased. Tomato which was available at Rs 40 a kg a few days ago has now become Rs 80. Cabbage is also being sold for up to Rs 50 per kg.
Wedding season increased prices
These days, cabbage and tomato are available in Ambala Cantonment vegetable market for 100 quintals each, but this time the demand for both the vegetables is 20 percent more. Some shopkeepers say that the demand for cauliflower, tomato, onion, potato, capsicum and ginger is high during the wedding season, hence due to lack of supply the prices of these vegetables are increasing by Rs 30 to 40.
In this regard, when the team of Local 18 went to the vegetable market of Ambala Cantonment and talked to the shopkeepers, the vegetable seller Monu told that due to the monsoon, many crops had already got spoiled this time and now the vegetable crops that are coming are also being bought by hotel and palace people due to the high demand during the wedding season. In such a situation, the vegetables we are getting are available at a very high price even in wholesale rates and because of this people are getting expensive vegetables.
He told that tomatoes were being sold at Rs 35 to 40 per kg a few days ago, but now they are being sold at Rs 80 per kg in the market. Similarly, ginger has become expensive by more than Rs 100 per kg and the price of cabbage was earlier between Rs 20 to Rs 25, now it is being sold at Rs 50 per kg. He told that due to inflation, people are now reducing their purchases and due to which the sale of vegetables in the market is also decreasing significantly.
Monsoon has caused damage
He said that capsicum, which was earlier being sold between Rs 50 and Rs 60 per kg, has now crossed Rs 100 per kg and people seem to be quite upset with the increased prices. Meanwhile, vegetable seller Samar said that this time vegetables have been cultivated by very few farmers because they had suffered huge losses during the monsoon season. In such a situation, due to less crop, the prices of vegetables are skyrocketing and tomato is being sold at Rs 80 per kg in the vegetable market. Because of this, people’s inclination towards vegetables has reduced and they are also purchasing very less.
The price of vegetables is skyrocketing
Jagdish Singh, who came to buy vegetables, told that he is a resident of Indrapuri and has come to the vegetable market to buy vegetables. But this time the prices of vegetables have increased so much that it has become difficult for the common man to survive due to this inflation. He told that due to increase in the prices of vegetables, the kitchen has been completely affected and if fruits are bought for small children, then they are also being sold at a price above 100 kg. He told that garlic is being sold at Rs 250 per kg and the prices of taste enhancing tomatoes are skyrocketing.
Bindra Devi told that the prices of capsicum have also increased a lot and it has become difficult to prepare vegetables in the winter season. He said that the price of peas has also crossed Rs 100, but every winter the prices of vegetables used to go down a bit, and this time they have increased a lot.
