Anti-Rabies Vaccine Misuse: A strange case has come to light from Bihar, where a person had gone to the Community Health Center for treatment of cough and chest pain. The health workers there crossed the limits of negligence and administered anti-rabies vaccine to that person unnecessarily. Not only this, the date of the next dose of the vaccine was also written on the slip. This case is being reported from Sangrampur CHC of Motihari district. Now this matter has become very viral on social media and people are raising questions about the system. The question is that if anti-rabies vaccine is administered to a person without any need, can it pose any health risks? Let’s try to find out the answer to this from the doctor.
Dr. Lokendra Gupta, Director of Emergency Medicine, Medanta Hospital, Lucknow told StuffUnknown. It is absolutely wrong to administer anti-rabies vaccine to a patient who has cough and chest pain. This is playing with the patient. It is not right for any person to do this. Anti-rabies vaccine is given when someone is bitten by a dog, cat, monkey, bat or any wild animal. The bite of these animals can cause fatal rabies infection and to protect against this, anti-rabies vaccine is administered. There is no point in administering this vaccine in any other disease.
Should anti-rabies vaccine be administered unnecessarily?
Doctor Lokendra told that usually anti-rabies vaccine is given only when a person is bitten by a dog or other animal causing rabies infection. However, for people who live around dogs all the time or work as dog handlers, anti-rabies vaccine is given as a pre-exposure vaccine. Veterinary doctors also take this vaccine first. Apart from this, the vaccine is administered to common people only if they are bitten by a dog, cat or monkey. Vaccination is not given to common people without need. Doctors give this vaccine as per the need.
Is this vaccine dangerous for health without any reason?
Experts said that anti-rabies vaccine usually has no side effects. If a person wants to get this vaccine even as a precautionary reason, then there is no harm in it. Its side effects are seen only in rare cases. However, if the person has cough, chest pain, fever or any other kind of disease, then there is no point in taking this vaccine. People should not be afraid of this vaccine, but should get it only when necessary. There is no benefit in getting vaccinated without any reason. Caution should be taken regarding this.
