Today we are going to tell you about the only waterfall in the world whose water does not fall from top to bottom, rather it flows parallel to the river for 3 kilometers. After this its water disappears into a deep ditch. The name of this waterfall located in Misiones province of Argentina is Mocona Falls (Yucuma Falls in Brazil).
There are many magnificent waterfalls around the world, which millions of people go to see. Among these, some waterfalls are known for their record breaking height (like Angel Falls 979 meters), while some waterfalls are famous for their vastness. Looking at these miracles it always seems that nature has an immense store of wonders. But today we are going to tell you about the only such waterfall in the world, which runs parallel to the river for 3 kilometers, then its water disappears in a deep gorge. This waterfall also does not follow the general rule of water falling from height. We are talking about Mocona Falls, which is also known as Yucuma Falls in Brazil. It is located on the Uruguay River, which serves as a natural border between Misiones Province in Argentina and Brazil.
Let us tell you that Argentine tourists know it by the name ‘Mokona’, which in Guarani language means ‘swallowing everything’, whereas in Brazil it is called ‘Yucuma’, which means ‘big waterfall’. This waterfall is located about 322 kilometers away from the largest Iguazu Falls and is famous for its unusual shape. Iguazu Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Argentina, but Mocona Falls has a different identity due to its unique feature. The water of Mokona Falls flows parallel to the river, instead of falling perpendicular to the river. This waterfall runs along the river for a length of about 3 kilometers and spills its water into a deep gorge.
This amazing geographical formation is caused by a mysterious submerged canyon present in the bottom of the Uruguay River, which is up to 100 meters deep and covers about 15 to 30 percent of the river’s width. It is believed that this valley was formed during the Ice Age. This valley is visible only at two places, of which Mokona Falls is one. The most surprising thing about this waterfall is that it is not visible for about 150 days of the year. When the water level in the Uruguay River is high and it flows over the edge of the canyon, the falls are completely covered in water. The real magic begins when the river level drops and the water starts cascading down the edge of the valley, forming Mokona Falls. You have to be there at the right time, when the water level is low, to witness this amazing sight.
Let us tell you that depending on the amount of water in the Uruguay River, the height of this waterfall varies from 5 meters to 7 meters, while its width can range from 1800 meters to 3000 meters (3 kilometers). This vastness and its parallel flows make it one of the Earth’s most extraordinary natural wonders. The area around Mokona Falls is protected as a provincial park, which includes the Yaboti Biosphere Reserve. This area is a paradise for tourists, where many exciting water related activities can be done. Tourists can enjoy rubber boat rafting, canoe outing, kayaking and wildlife safari along the river. Mocona Falls is not only a geological wonder, but also an important tourist destination for Argentina and Brazil, testifying to the amazing artistry of nature.
