A dusty painting kept in an ordinary garage has created history. An old painting that had been lying under a workbench in an Oxfordshire man’s house for years suddenly became a sensation among the world’s experts.
There have been many great painters in the world whose paintings are sold for lakhs and crores. But can you imagine that even an old painting lying in a garage can be sold for crores of rupees? The same thing happened recently when a painting gathering dust in a garage in England was auctioned. The painting was sold for crores of rupees. But the question arises that what was so special about this painting…let us tell you.
A dusty painting kept in an ordinary garage has created history. An old painting that had been lying under a workbench in an Oxfordshire man’s house for years suddenly became a sensation among the world’s experts. This is the same painting that is now believed to be a masterpiece by the great Italian Renaissance artist Pietro Vannucci – better known to the world as Perugino. This panel painting, identified as “Madonna and Child”, was purchased by the owner years ago as junk without any information, but as soon as it was listed on the website of Banbury-based JS Fine Arts, it caused a stir in the international art world. The phone lines were flooded with collectors, and the staff found it difficult to handle the surge of bidders.

Painting being sold for Rs 8 crore
As soon as the auction began, the mere 15-minute round looked like a dramatic Vatican unveiling – online, phone and in-house bids heated up the atmosphere. Ultimately a private buyer bought this painting by paying £685,000 (about 7.5 lakh dollars). This amount is more than double the auction house’s previous record of £285,000. The thing to think about is that this same artwork was gathering dust near the tools in the garage for years.
