Andy Rubin was born on March 13, 1963 in Chappaqua, New York. Since childhood, he was inclined towards robotics and machines. His father sold electronic gadgets, and every new machine that came into the shop became a new toy for Rubin. This interest took him forward in the world of computer science. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Utica College in 1986.

First job at Carl Zeiss AG

After his degree, Rubin’s initial career started with robotics. He became a robotics engineer at Carl Zeiss AG. His coworkers jokingly started calling him “Android” because of his love of automation. This surname later proved to change the face of the entire tech industry. His life took a big turn in 1989 when he became a part of Apple. Rubin’s talents caught the attention of Apple and he was hired as a manufacturing engineer. Here he developed the world’s first host-based software modem, which was a major technological achievement at the time.

After being fired from Apple, Rubin joined General Magic, which was like Apple’s brainchild in the tech world. Here he worked on Magic Cap operating system and mobile technology. After this he joined WebTV (MSN TV) and then Danger Inc. Arrived, where he created the famous Sidekick phone. This was the period when mobile technology was changing rapidly and Rubin understood that the future lay in mobile phones.
