Lakhimpur Kheri: Women are becoming self-reliant in the Tharu tribe area of ​​Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. The fate of women has changed by joining the group. Women prepare slippers from jute found in the forest and after selling them, the income of women is also doubling.

While talking to the Integrated Tribal Development Project Sales Center Balera Mahila Rajni said that we have been connected through the group in the year 2015. At present we hold the post of secretary of the group. Most of the women associated with our group are those whom we employ. Through groups, women prepare jute slippers. She is not only strengthening her identity but is also becoming a major medium for economic empowerment.

What is the specialty of jute slippers?

Women of the Tharu community have long been skilled in handicrafts and the use of natural fibres. Earlier women used to prepare household items from grass and cotton, but with the changing times, women of Tharu tribe are learning new techniques and now women of Tharu tribe area are preparing slippers from jute. Jute slippers are light, durable and completely biodegradable, due to which their demand is continuously increasing in the city and on online platforms, due to which the income of women is doubling.

How slippers are prepared

The process of making jute slippers is completely handmade. Women first prepare the jute rope, then mold it to form the base of the slippers, after which design and decoration work is done, giving each pair of slippers a unique look.

While talking, Rajni told that Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has also come to our centre. He praised our work and after that he also bought slippers. Apart from Uttar Pradesh, slippers are also sold in other places. We also sell slippers on online platforms, which doubles our income. If we talk about it, at this time a pair of slippers is available for Rs 300.
