In horticulture it is also called ‘guava cancer’. This serious disease caused by fungus first affects the roots of the tree, due to which the plant stops taking food. As a result, the leaves of the tree gradually start turning yellow and the growth of the entire plant stops. This disease has become a serious problem for the farmers cultivating Pink Taiwan variety, for the management of which immediate steps need to be taken.

Talking to Local 18, Dr. Mahesh Kumar, horticulture expert posted at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Niyamatpur, says that Uktha disease starts with yellowing of the leaves in the lower part of the tree. This fungus gradually takes over a branch, after which that branch starts drying up. As the disease progresses, the bark of the tree starts cracking. The most dangerous symptom is that the infected tree becomes weak from the roots and comes out easily when pulled. If you do not treat it in time, the entire tree dries up and falls. Therefore, it is important to take immediate effective control as soon as the initial symptoms appear.

how to protect

To protect the guava tree from the infection of Ukhatha disease, cut off the branches which are vulnerable to infection. Remove these branches from the field and destroy them. If the entire plant gets infected, remove it along with the roots and burn it or dig a hole and bury it in the soil. Apart from this, farmers can also do chemical treatment. Make a solution of 2 grams of Copper Oxychloride in every liter of water and drench it on the roots of guava plant. Doing this will also prevent infection.
