As the cold increases in winter, freezing of hands and feet, cold and joint pain become common. In such weather, both body heat and immunity start weakening. Suryabhedan Pranayam mentioned in Yoga is considered to be a simple and effective solution to reduce these problems.
Cold of hands and feet, frequent cold, headache and increased stiffness in joints are very common problems in winter. Cold air and changing weather weaken the body’s immunity. In such a situation, if yoga and pranayam are included in the daily routine, then these problems can be relieved to a great extent. Especially Suryabhedan Pranayam, which has been considered very effective for winter in Ayurveda and Yoga science.
Experts of Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga say that Suryabhedan is the easiest and effective pranayam, which naturally increases the internal warmth of the body. It activates ‘Surya Nadi’ i.e. Pingala Nadi, which transmits energy, warmth and activity in the body. This pranayama is done only through the right nostril, hence it is considered to be associated with solar energy.
Regular practice of Suryabhedan Pranayam is beneficial in many types of problems. Common cold, blocked nose, sinus and minor breathing related problems start reducing due to this. It calms the brain and provides relief from headache and migraine. Vata related problems like joint pain, arthritis and back pain can also be reduced to a great extent by this pranayama. Apart from this, it improves digestion, eliminates stomach infections and parasites and increases the body’s immunity. Due to increase in warmth in the body, the chill of winter is also felt less. Mentally it increases concentration and makes the mind stable.
Experts also tell the correct way of practicing it. To start the practice, sit straight in Sukhasana, Padmasana or any comfortable posture. First of all, close the left nostril with the help of thumb and slowly take a deep breath through the right nostril. After inhaling, pause for a few moments, then exhale through the left nostril. This is considered a complete cycle. It is advisable to do 10-15 cycles every morning on an empty stomach. Due to this, the effect of Pranayama becomes visible quickly and the body remains energetic throughout the day.
According to Yogacharyas, if Suryabhedan Pranayam is done daily for just 10-15 minutes in winter, then immunity becomes very strong and diseases caused by change in weather do not occur easily. It keeps the body naturally warm and also provides relief from stiffness, lethargy and pain caused by cold. However, this pranayam is not safe for everyone. People with high blood pressure, heart patients, people with Pitta nature or those who feel a lot of heat in the body should avoid doing Suryabhedan. This should not be done even during high fever. In case of any kind of problem or chronic disease, it is important to consult a specialist before starting Pranayam. Suryabhedan Pranayam, done correctly, works like a natural heater in winter and keeps both body and mind healthy and balanced.
