New Delhi. Former India captain and great batsman Sunil Gavaskar reprimanded him for the strategy of Indian players against South Africa in the second session on the fourth day of Cape Town Test. The hosts went for lunch and needed only 41 more to win the series, while Kohli & Co needed 7 wickets to win. It turned out to be an easy task for South Africa after the break, as they successfully chased down the run and stopped the Indian team from creating history.
In such a situation, Sunil Gavaskar felt as if India had conceded defeat even before the match was over. Speaking on Star Sports Network, the former captain questioned why Shardul Thakur and Jasprit Bumrah didn’t bowl in the post-lunch session. He said, “It was a mystery to me why Shardul Thakur and Jasprit Bumrah were not bowling after lunch? It was almost as if India had decided that they were not going to win it.”

Gavaskar said, “The field placements for Ashwin were not right… Singles were easily available. Five fielders were in the deep. The batsmen were taking chances. So this is your chance to get him out.” Cricketer-turned-commentator Gavaskar praised the home team for showing great determination while batting on difficult pitches. Gavaskar said conditions are not conducive to batting, but South Africa have done a commendable job in the last few matches.
He further said, “The pitches were not the best to bat, but the spirit shown by South Africa in Johannesburg, the spirit shown by them in this Test has also been commendable. It showed the character of the team.” It would be fair to say that batsman Keegan Pietersen was the flag bearer of South Africa’s batting, who thwarted India’s bowling strategy in critical situations.

He remained as the highest scorer of the 3-match series. He made 276 in 6 innings, which included three half-centuries. During this his average was 46.
