Smart Class Medical Education: Important revelations have been made in the research done in GSVM Medical College to make medical studies easier. According to the study, the understanding and memorizing ability of MBBS students studying through smart class was found to be better than that of students studying through PowerPoint.
Kanpur: Medical studies have always been considered difficult and challenging. Due to heavy syllabus and complex subjects, there is pressure on MBBS students to study. In such a situation, if the method of teaching becomes easy and interesting, then the learning ability of the students can improve. Under this thinking, a research conducted at GSVM Medical College has revealed that studying through smart class significantly improves the understanding and memorizing ability of the students.
Who did this research and why
This important research was done under the leadership of Dr. Yashwant Rai, former HOD of Pediatric Department of GSVM Medical College. Senior doctor Namita and Dr. Dhruv Aggarwal were also included in the research team. The main objective of the study was to know which method of teaching through smart board and traditional PowerPoint based teaching is more effective for MBBS students.
How was the study done?
This research was done at GSVM Medical College between April and July 2025. A total of 360 MBBS students were included in this. All the students were divided into two equal groups. The first group was taught through smart board, while the second group was taught through PowerPoint slides. In a smart class, teachers could write on the screen, highlight important points and explain the topic with the help of pictures and videos. Whereas the PowerPoint class was completely based on prepared slides.
Difference revealed in evaluation
Students’ understanding and learning ability was assessed through the OSCE examination. There was no significant difference in the performance of the two groups immediately after the class. But when evaluated over a period of time, the results were quite surprising. From this it became clear that the effect of the methods of study is more visible in the long run.
Smart class ahead in long term memory
In the evaluation conducted after one month, the ability to remember and understand the students who studied using smart board was found to be 46.1 percent. Whereas the efficiency of students who studied through PowerPoint was 40.3 percent. The same difference was seen even after two months. The performance of the Smart Class group was 45 percent, while the PowerPoint group could only reach 39 percent. This made it clear that smart class is more effective in remembering information for a long time.
Feedback from students and professors
During the research, feedback was also taken from students and teachers. Most of the students said that smart class is more interesting and it becomes easier to understand the subjects. According to students, things are remembered for a long time when they study through digital medium. The professors said that the use of smart boards has increased the participation of students in the class. Students ask more questions and their interest in studies has also increased.
Important pointers for medical education
Dr. Yashwant Rai says that a large part of medical education in India still depends on traditional methods. But this research indicates that if smart classes are promoted in medical colleges, then not only the quality of education will improve but the performance of the students will also improve. This can prove to be an important step to make medical education more effective in future.
